Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Soft Matter Science and Engineering (BAIC-SM) was built on the existing strengths of research in the Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT), China. One objective of the center is to enable the development of novel bioprocesses and synthetic biology tools that can lead to clean and sustainable production of fuels and chemicals, including specialty chemicals used for medicine and nutraceuticals. The center will have established itself as one of the leaders in bioprocess development in China and also a significant international player.
Dr. Huimin Zhao is the Steven L. Miller Chair Professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, and professor of chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, and bioengineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).Dr. Zhao has authored and co-authored over 250 research articles and over 20 issued and pending patent applications with several being licensed by industry. Fifteen (14) of his former graduate students and postdocs became professors in the United States (7), China (4), Korea (2), and Egypt (1).His primary research interests are in the development and applications of synthetic biology tools to address society’s most daunting challenges in health, energy, and sustainability, and in the fundamental aspects of enzyme catalysis, cell metabolism, and gene regulation.
Dr. Shuobo Shireceived his Ph.D. degreein Biochemical Engineering from Tianjin University in 2009. Then he did his postdoc research in Jens Nielsen’s group at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, and worked as a scientist in Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore. His main scientific interest focuses onmetabolic engineering and synthetic biology, including metabolic engineering of microbial cell factories for biofuel productions, development of genome engineering and synthetic biology tools, and development of automation systems for synthetic biology. Dr. Shi has authored and co-authored over 20 research articles and has been cited more than 400 times.
Currently, Prof. Zhao is also the visiting Principal Investigator in BAIC-SM, and Dr. Shi is the Co-PI of the group in BUCT. The group is now looking for several highly talented postdoctoral researchers to contribute their research in BAIC-SM.
